In honour of the indescribably awesome Maurice Sendak who recently passed away, here are two wonderful Where the Wild Things Are bento meals created by Anna The Red.

Once again the awesome power of nature goes and produces something that looks like it couldn’t possibly be real. Last time it was the Jewel Caterpillar. Now we have the prettiest ear of corn we’ve ever seen.
This is the aptly named Glass Gem Corn. The photos are from Seeds Trust (“a 25 year-old family seed company dedicated to teaching you to save your own seeds, grow a delicious home garden and create stunning native landscapes”) who shared the following background story about this stunning vegetable:
“Seedsman Greg Schoen got the seed from Carl Barnes, a part-Cherokee man, now in his 80’s, in Oklahoma. He was Greg’s “corn-teacher”. Greg was in the process of moving last year and wanted someone else to store and protect some of his seeds. He left samples of several corn varieties, including glass gem. I grew out a small handful this past summer just to see.The rest, as they say is history. I got so excited, I posted a picture on Facebook. We have never seen anything like this. Unfortunately, we did not grow out enough to sell. Look for a small amount for sale starting in August 2011.”Of course now we can’t help but wonder if it tastes as good as it looks.

Gather round, it’s time for another sugary sweet, heartwarming tale from the Department of Awesome and Unlikely Interspecies Friendships:
“A paternal [and completely awesome] dog has adopted an abandoned baby goat as his surrogate child. Billy the boxer has become the constant companion of the 12-day old kid called Lilly. He sleeps with the goat, licks her clean, and protects her from any dangers at Pennywell Farm wildlife centre at Buckfastleigh, near Totnes, Devon.
The kid was abandoned by her mother when she was only a few hours old and adopted by paternal Billy when his owner Elizabeth Tozer began hand rearing the goat. The unusual bond has developed over the last month and the pair are now inseparable. Elizabeth said: “Lilly follows Billy around which is really quite amusing to watch and Billy sleeps with the goat and cleans her mouth after she feeds.”
Lilly was the smallest of a litter of three kids and her mother abandoned her because she could only care for the two stronger ones. The pair have attracted quite a crowd at the animal centre and the staff are keen to see how their relationship will develop.”

“A shark with a laser attached to its fin swims towards the camera. A company called Wicked Lasers promised it would fulfil the Austin Powers character Dr Evil’s request for “sharks with frickin’ laser beams attached” if it got 2,000 Facebook ‘Likes’. The company hired marine biologist Luke Tipple to carry out the task…”

From the Department of Animals with Built-in Awesome Hats:
This is a Northern Royal Flycatcher, a species of bird in the Tyrannidae family. It is found in Mexico, south through most of Central America, to north-western Colombia and far western Venezuela. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests. They are 16.5–18 cm (6½-7”) long, with an erectile fan-shaped crest, coloured red in the male and yellow-orange in the female. The display with the crest fully raised is seen extremely rarely, except during banding sessions. And we must say, it’s pretty spectacular.

Underpants Candy - It’s candy that looks like underpants! You’ll feel like you’re eating out of a delicious hamper.
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed
by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.
So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor.
Catch the trade winds in your sails.
